How Much Does Safety Affect Your Profitability?

Although no data could be found for power sweeping, construction companies report the following benefits due to the implementation of safety management practices:

  • 51% report increases in project ROI; with a fifth of those reporting increases of greater than 5%
  • 43% report faster project schedules, with half reporting schedule improvements of a week or more
  • 39% report a decrease in project budget from a safety program, with a quarter reporting decreases of 5% or more. Only 15% reported that safety programs cost firms more – debunking the myth that safety has to negatively affect a firm’s bottom line.
  • 82% report an improved reputation
  • 71% report lower injury rates
  • 66% report they have a greater ability to contract new work
  • 66% report better project quality

• Unsafe practices can cost you in many different areas including workers comp and insurance costs, safety fines and the loss or downtime of employees. The FREE  OSHA’s $afety Pays program offers guidelines and tools to help contractors even better understand the impact a lack of safety has on business and profitability.

• FREE 2013 report by McGraw Hill Construction on safety management in the construction industry.

• The Association of Equipment Manufacturers offers a free pictorial database of line art for use in warning signs about a wide variety of safety issues. Most of these are universal-type symbols for showing the dangers of particular situations. For a view of all of what’s available, choose the ‘View the Full Thumbnail Report’ link shown to the right of the page in the ‘Downloads.’

• The removal of sulfur and other compounds in Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) fuel decreases its conductivity and increases its ability to store static charge. Therefore it is vitally important that all components are grounded during refueling and other ULSD activities. We have on the WSA site, courtesy of the Association of Equipment Manufacturers, a bulletin warning of these risks and how to mitigate them.

 • Free OSHA app for Apple and Android combines heat index data from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration with the user’s location to determine necessary protective measures. Based on the risk level of the heat index, the app provides users with information about precautions they may take, such as drinking fluids, taking rest breaks and adjusting work operations. Users also can review the signs and symptoms of heat stroke, heat exhaustion and other heat-related illnesses, and learn about first aid steps to take in an emergency. Information for supervisors is also available through the app on how to train employees on heat illness signs and symptoms. Additionally, users can contact OSHA directly through the app.

 • Heat illness can result in worker injury and slowdowns in productivity. Take a look at the information OSHA provides on the topic.

Safety-related Apps for iPhone and/or Android

SafetyAppButton

iConstructSafe (Apple products only)

SafetyAppCategoriesiConstructSafe is a collection of 2-3 minute safety reminder videos for the construction professional’s use at the job site (no wifi needed). The app includes a selection of safety videos on power, hand, air, gas and other powered tools. It includes videos on PPE, preventing falls, ergonomics and more.

These 2 minute videos are designed to remind workers on how to use tools safely, right before they use a tool. The worker uses a menu to select the tool video and watches safety tips on the tool, on site, at the tool crib. The app is a collection of engaging short videos that are stored and viewable on an iPhone, iTouch or iPad; no wifi is needed at the site.

Monthly video updates will be posted; connect with wifi and get new safety videos and updates, including foreman’s tips on “toolbox talks” and ideas for superintendents running monthly or quarterly safety/productivity meetings.

Warning: The videos are resident in the app so this safety app can be used on a job site without wifi, so it takes 5-10 minute to download the app given the size of the video files. (Total @ 250mb)
